A study from the University of Maryland found that a hacker attacks a computer every 39 seconds, affecting one in every three Americans each year. In addition, it’s believed that 95% of cyber-attacks are caused by human error.

With that in mind, Warren Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing has four top cybersecurity tips to follow so you’re not just another victim.

  • How to Spot Phishing Emails

Bad guys are still sending emails out pretending to be companies looking for your personal information, and they look more convincing than ever. Company logos, proper grammar, and referring to you by name are all tricks being used to add to your confidence. There are still two ways to tell if these emails are phony. One, look at the sender’s email address and see if it has the domain name of the company it’s claiming to be from. Two, hover over the link they want you to click; if it has a suspicious-looking URL, do not click on it. Call the main customer service number of the company in question if you want to make sure that the email is authentic.

  • Keep Passwords Strong

It might be annoying, but there’s a reason your password should have a capital letter, a number, and a special character. Those are all things that help you stay ahead of password-guessing software that hackers utilize. For the greatest amount of security, use a random password generator, but be sure to write it down in a safe place so you don’t forget it.

  • Keep Browsers Updated

Be sure to keep browsers on your computer (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Internet Explorer, etc.) updated, as the regular updates include security measures to keep hackers from accessing your personal information.

  • Password-Protect Your Wi-Fi

Smart devices like televisions and cameras can also be infiltrated, and it’s easy for hackers to do so through unprotected Wi-Fi. Make sure to change the default passwords on smart devices and set your Wi-Fi router to a private, password-protected setting.
